Sammy Needs a Home for the Holidays
Sammy the senior pug needs a home
Anyone who has ever owned and loved a senior dog can tell you how special they are. No, they don’t have the bounciness of puppies – but they have a calm serenity that more than makes up for it.
They make wonderful bed buddies, couch companions and short walk pals. They ask for a few head scratches, a warm spot on the couch, a kind word now and then. They are content to simply be with you – they don’t need to be entertained, or kept engaged by ten mile walks. An outing in the car, or a short walk through town, and your senior canine companion is tired out and pleased.
If you’re ready to share your life with a dog who will ask for little, and bring so much, then maybe you’re the right home for Sammy.

Sammy the pug has a lot of love to give!
Sammy has had a wonderful life. He’s been with his current family since he was just eight weeks old. In fact, he and the young daughter in the family are the same age and shared the same stroller when they were both much younger!
That was a long time ago. Now, Sammy is 13, and blind, and maybe not quite so bouncy as he used to be, although for an elderly dog, he does very well. He comes when he is called, although he may bump into a few walls along his path, he can sit and down and bark on command. He loves to be in the middle of things, and he loves to eat. He doesn’t even mind if you grab him without any warning. He’s lived with kids all of his life, so he’s used to that. He can walk on a leash, although new places tend to frighten him. He likes visitors. Did I mention that he loves to eat?
Sammy’s family moved into their current apartment just two months ago. They thought that no one would pay attention to their little old blind Pug, but that’s not the way it worked out. Now they are facing eviction if Sammy doesn’t leave. A single working mom with a teenaged daughter doesn’t have many options. Sammy has to find a new home. And he’s got to find it before Thanksgiving. Sammy’s situation is pretty desperate, even though Sammy doesn’t know that.

Floor Time
The pups are now old enough to spend some time out on the floor, interacting with the ‘big dogs’ and getting into trouble. Pixie is un thrilled about the concept of a bare floor — we discovered that we have to put a towel down for her, or she’ll just sit in one spot, frozen. Even with the towel, she’ll only venture one foot off the edge – anything else is uncharted territory for her.

Delilah is French for "Devil Dog"
It’s quite possible that Delilah wins the ‘weirdest French Bulldog ever‘ award, or at least the award for ‘weirdest French Bulldog ever owned or known by me‘ award.
First of all, she still will not come all the way down the stairs. This is not because she’s incapable of it (unlike Dexter, who’s so large in the head that walking downhill causes him to tumble in a slinky-like fashion).
Our stair routine goes something like this –
The stairs from our basement are open at about the half way mark. Delilah, who has no issues going up the stairs, will only come down as far as the opening on the stairs. She lurks there, popping her head over the edge to see what we’re doing. My computer sits right beneath this opening, and I often look up and see her peeking over the side, checking to see if I’ve decided to spontaneously bake her some dog cookies. If she’s in the mood, she will sometimes leap into my arms from this point when I walk over to see her. Usually, though, she waits until I try to approach her, then bolts back to the top of the stairs. It’s like she thinks I have cooties or something. Once she’s sure I’m safely far away from the stairs, she’ll come back down again, for a second look.

If this isn’t enough, there’s the fact that of all the dogs, she’s the only one of our dogs who just will not come when she is called, thus leaving me to play a little game I like to call “Come and get the nice cookie so Mommy can tackle you like a sausage shaped football, you infuriating little beast”. Actually, the term ‘like to call’ is more of a misnomer for ‘am forced to screech every time she gets outside the fence’. Luckily for me, she’s completely food motivated, and would sell her dark little brindle soul for a dried up crumb of milkbone, so I’ll be working on the ‘come!’ command diligently over the next while.
Oh, and I should explain about chairs. Delilah doesn’t sit on them, like normal dogs – she scales the back of them, like some sort of mutant goat. I admit that she’s my ‘go to’ lap dog for chair sitting, but she doesn’t take being left behind very well if I have to get up for any reason. In fact, she barks with a sort of affronted indignation that’s almost as funny as it is alarming. Here’s a short clip of her Majesty expressing her opinion on the topic of my getting up and leaving her.
I’ve threatened to send her to Chicago to live with Hope and Dax, but I like them too much to inflict this kind of punishment on them.
Evaluating Embedded Video Players
As you might have noticed, I usually use the YouTube video player when I’m embedding a video in a blog entry. This is because YouTube is the ‘standard’ for embedded video, and certainly not because it is the best.
The best, in my opinion, is Blip.Tv
The videos retain more of their original quality, the screen size is more generous, and the player is cleaner looking. I’ve heard from a few people that they can’t see the Blip player, which means that all of the great qualities in the world are suddenly moot.
