Buddha and her Puggy Pal, Hope

This year, one of Pam’s rescues – this time a brave little Pug named Ten (after the year, not the contest…) – has once again made it into the top ten in Purina’s Rally to Rescue. In fact, Ten is running in front, which is no surprise to me after reading his story. The winner of the contest takes home $5000 in pet food coupons (Pugs love FOOD!) Please vote for Ten, for the sake of the other Puggies at APRA, but also in recognition of a really fine rescuer.

And Frenchie owner! Her first Frenchie was my Stone’s mom, Buddha, and she’s had Frenchies ever since! I’ve attached a picture of Buddha and her best buddy, a little crippled Pug named Hope, who was Pam’s inspiration to start a rescue. As well as a gazillion little misfit Pugs…
Buddha isn’t the only Frenchie Pam has from us – she also has Felix, aka Bullmarket Absolut White Dragon, father of Elliott, son of Maggie’s Lola, and grandfather/great grandfather to half our dogs (and to the puppies some of you own!).
Pam is a phenomenal woman. Pug rescue almost always breaks my heart, but Pam’s Pug rescue gets some of the most heart wrenching cases you have ever heard. The halt and the lame are the very least of it, and most heart breaking of all are the senior pugs who seem to be so commonly and routinely dumped by the people who were supposed to protect them for life.
Please vote for Pam – and if you feel like it, maybe you could also make a donation to her rescue, as well. Do it for all of those Pugs that no one else but Pam could have the strength to care for.
A strange spate of Pug abandonments have been taking place across a picturesque town on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island. Nanaimo, BC shelter worker Helen Roberts says that in more than 20 years of experience, she’s never seen anything like it.
The abandonment took place over the course of the month of December, and all the dogs involved were young, intact female Pugs with a variety of health problems. Authorities are now speculating that this was a case of a puppy mill dumping off breeding stock that they had no further use for.
The first two pugs were found wandering near Nanaimo’s Country Club Center mall, the first on December 13th, the second on December 29th. A third pug was discovered at the same location at a later, unspecified date in December. The fourth pug was found near another Nanaimo mall, The North Town Center, also on December 29th. All of the found dogs were dirty, malnourished, parasite infested and in need of attention.
It’s baffling that anyone with enough knowledge to breed and raise pugs would be unaware that there are a myriad of homes in Canada waiting to take in unwanted adults, even those with health issues. British Columbia has a well organized Pug Club and rescue group, who I’m sure would have been happy to help. Instead, someone dumped these girls unceremoniously in the snow, in the coldest month of the year, and left them to fend for themselves.
Two of the dogs have found new homes through the Nanaimo and District SPCA, one has been adopted by the person who found it, and the final Puglette is awaiting a new home at Walker’s Animal Rescue in Nanaimo. Let’s hope that the new lives they’ve found are better than the ones they’ve left behind them.
Sorry, I just haven’t felt much like writing anything since Ellie’s death. I guess sometimes words just don’t seem to matter, and this was one of those times.
At any rate, we’re here, we’re fine, there are no puppies (because apparently, we’re under some sort of catastrophic, puppy disappearing cloud of doom), but we’re still hanging in.
Maybe a second try for pups later this summer, when I can stand the idea.
Oh, and I’m at Charlotte’s, re discovering how much fun pugs are. They’re like valium on four legs.

Holy Cows!
Looks like this has been a banner month for cows going nuts all over Ontario!
First I have my own run in with off roadin’, garden crashing, snowbank scaling cows, and now this –
Police shot and killed a steer that escaped from an overturned truck this morning, saying they had no choice because the animal was charging at people.“It charged at one of the officers, right at him, and he had no choice,” Provincial police Sgt. Dave Woodford said.He explained that the animal had actually hit and thrown four other people in a residential neighbourhood of Mississauga. No one was seriously injured.
“These things are big animals and they’re just like bulls. When they charge at you, they’re going to throw you,” he said.
The steer escaped from a cattle truck, along with two cows and a bull. The truck overturned at about 6:40 a.m., snarling traffic on the Queen Elizabeth Way near Highway 427.
Two of the animals ended up in the backyard of a home on Brentano Boulevard.
Initially, the animals were peaceful, calmly munching away at the shrubs in the garden.
“They were rubbing up against my father’s shed. They were fine in the backyard. I guess when they tried to get them out of the backyard, that’s when they got really restless,” said resident Teresa Nimer-Boutros.
The steer got spooked when handlers tried to corral it and force it into a replacement truck. One of a number of portable iron gates used to guide the animals into the truck fell, scaring the steer. He knocked over the driver of the truck who was helping in the effort.

Poor cow. You kind of have to feel sorry for it, although if you think about what was likely facing them at the end of their journey, being shot by a policeman after a nice run through a garden and few mouthfuls of hedge probably seems like a better way to go out.
