In Praise of Great Vets

A few years back, when Sean and I were still in a fairly new-ish relationship, we took in his elderly family cat. Misty had first been his sister’s cat, and then had sort of become his mother’s. Now that his mother was sick, Misty became ours. She was already elderly – 19, by his best estimate, and plagued with illnesses. Diabetes, a tumor on her jaw, hyperthyroidism – the list was fairly long, but in spite of it all, Misty was a happy, content little cat. We gave her her insulin, monitered her diet, tried to keep up her calorie intake and hoped for a few more good years.

In the spring of 2005, Misty seemed to go downhill. It was almost impossible to keep weight on her, so we moved her over to a pricey, vet recommended diet. I had my misgivings, but Misty was Sean’s cat, and I decided that the best move on my part was to step back and let him and his vet sort out her care. Sean isn’t like me – he doesn’t pester his vets with questions and second guessing and ‘but I read this on the web’ type statements. I suppose that makes him a better veterinary patient than me, although I’m not so sure that being ‘pesky’ isn’t frequently a good course to take when charting the care of our pets.

Mickey Rourke Brings Chihuahua to Oscars (more or less)

Say what you will about actor Mickey Rourke, but the man sure loved his dog. The ‘eccentric’ actor, known for his volatile temper, foul mouth, bad plastic surgery and hard drinking ways showed a remarkable soft spot while attending the Academy Awards on Sunday night. Instead of an expensive necklace, Rourke wore a custom made necklace with a picture of his recently departed Chihuahua, Loki.

Photos and details after the cut.

HSUS – No More Lies Widgets are Ready

UPDATE: The widget service I used to make the HSUS widgets has gone subscription only, so they are no longer available. I am working on a new, simple java script version, which I’ll add to this post when they are complete. In the meantime, go and read Humane Watch – devoted to exposing the truth about Peta and the HSUS

No matter what the HSUS might have been at one point in time or another, what they are now is a group of con artists, sucking money out of sympathetic donors to ‘save dogs’ that they have nothing to do with, no shelter to place them in, and no intention of helping.

Where I come from, we call that ‘fraud’, and it’s no different than people who raise money for ‘Tsunami relief’ who don’t use it for anything of the like (or, hey! It’s like people who raise money for ‘Hurricane Katrina’ animals that they have no intention of helping. Hello again, HSUS!).

Morality is based on truth — aggressive fund raising for dogs you have ZERO to do with is bull. You don’t get to raise money to ‘save’ dogs on one hand, while calling for their death with other — not without some of us calling ‘Shenanigans!‘ on you.

Banned Aid Coalition's $1 a Dog Video

This video was created by the Banned Aid coalition as a sort of ‘thank you’ to all the breeds who offered their help during their recent “$1 a dog” fund raising drive.

Would You Pay $1 to Fight Stupidity?

Please help the BannedAid coalition in their upcoming legal battle to have Ontario’s Breed Bans over turned. They have retained of Canada’s TOP attorneys, Clayton Ruby, and now they need our help to continue the fight.

This fight is NOT just about “pit bulls” — it affects pedigree dogs of a large variety of breeds, and their owners ability to show, breed, own and love them. Even if you’re not a fan of Pitties, if you’re a fan of the right to own the pedigree breed of your choice, then please make a tiny donation of just one dollar.

That’s all they’re asking for — just donate $1 for every dog you can reach out and touch right now, in honor of all the despairing owners who have had their own beloved dogs ripped away from their sides.

In case you think that issues ‘like this’ can’t or won’t or don’t affect French Bulldogs, please note that rumors abound that if the ban isn’t over turned, it will be expanded to include “All Bull Breeds” (this means Boston BULL Terriers, ‘English’ Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Bullmastiffs and Bull Terriers), as well as Rotties, Dobes and most of the remaining non banned Mastiff breeds. In other cities with breed bans, Bulldogs, Frenchies and even PUGS have been banned.

It’s time we all put a stop to this madness, and fight back wherever we are. This isn’t about “Pit Bulls” anymore – it’s about a concerted effort, spearheaded by the Animal Rights Groups who are too often called in as ‘experts’ when these laws are being drafted, to put an end to pure bred dog ownership. We can’t afford the luxury anymore of thinking this is about ‘them’, not ‘us’. The future is here, and we are now ‘them’.

Again, just $1 – think about what $1 from every owner or breeder of a purebred dog could accomplish.
